DISC GOLF TOURNAMENT

Saturday, May 1 & May 15, 2004
Navtel Disc Golf Course
Beaverbrook Park, 2500 Campeau Dr.
Kanata, Ontario

PLAYER PACKS
Once again, the Ottawa World's Biggest tournament will have great player packs for those who register early.  There are four divisions this year – Beginner, Novice, Intermediate, and Open, and each player pack will consist of at least a golf disc, a souvenir tournament T-shirt, a 3-month free DGU subscription, a bumper sticker, and a mini disc.  Player packs will contain other cool items, depending on the division entered.  A SPECIAL PRIZE, in the form of a Trophy Disc, will be awarded to the person who brings in the most new players to the tournament.  A "new player" is defined as someone who hasn't played at a recognized tournament in Ottawa or Gatineau over the past three seasons.  Pre-register or arrive early to get the best stuff!

REGISTRATION
Those players who register and pay in advance will get the best choice of discs, t-shirts, and minis, based on availability.  Those registering on the day of the tournament will take their chances, as once the player packs are gone, no more will be ordered.  On the day of the World's Biggest, we will be adding an extra hole to the 9-hole Navtel Disc Golf Course, so we can accomodate up to 60 people, and 60 player packs have been ordered.

Please note that there will be TWO editions of the World's Biggest this year, on two separate weekends (May 1st and May 15th).  Players can compete in both for a $5 upgrade, although there is only one player pack per player, while quantities last.  You can pre-register for just the second event prior to the first date but please take note that we have a limited number of packs for each division, so register fast!

Registration for the tournament can be done quickly by mailing it to the registrar on or before April 23, or by delivering it to the registrar's address (see the entry form).  Otherwise, you can register on the day of the tournament near the tee-off location for Hole #1 at the Navtel Disc Golf Course from 11:30 - 12:30.  The close of registration will be at 12:30, with play starting at 13:00.  Please be on time.

Free lunches are available on May 1st to any participants or their guests if they participate in KANATA CLEAN UP DAY.  For those available to help keep our park looking great, please meet in the Navtel Disc Golf Course parking lot (directions below) between 9:45 and 10:00 AM.  Lunch will be at the Community Centre at the corner of Beaverbrook and Teron about 1 km away, starting at 11:30.  Lunch will be BBQ hot dogs and pop/juice.

COURSE LOCATION
The Navtel Disc Golf Course is located in Beaverbrook Park in Kanata, Ontario, near the Earl of March Secondary School and the Mlacak Arena, as shown by the red star in the highway map.

Pull off the Queensway (Hwy 417) at the Eagleson Road off ramp.

If you are coming from Ottawa, then go straight through the first two sets of lights, and turn right into the Mlacak Arena parking lot at the third set of lights.  If you are coming from the West, then turn left onto Eagleson.  Turn left at the next set of lights onto Campeau Drive.  Go straight through the next set of lights and turn right into the Mlacak Arena parking lot at the second set of lights.

Once in the parking lot, turn left to go along the side of the arena, then veer left onto a narrow road that will take you to the parking lot on the far side of the tennis courts.  For more details, check out our street map.

FORMAT & PRIZES
World's Biggest is coming to the National Capital Region - this time in Kanata! The World's Biggest will consist of rounds of play using both the "Blue" (long) and "Red" (short) teepads that have been established for this course, and will also consist of at least one bonus hole per round which will be unique to this event.

For the purpose of prizes, the two World's Biggest dates will be considered as separate events, so you can win CTPs and Longest Drives on both days, along with prizes for doing well in the various divisions.

Once again, the "Rolf Frei Trophy Disc" will be awarded to whoever brings the most "new" people out to play at our World's Biggest tournaments.  This full colour trophy disc will be awarded at the conclusion of the 2nd event on May 15th.

COURSE LAYOUT
The Navtel Disc Golf Course has nine holes with two tee placements for each hole.  The course is divided into two sections due to existing park usage (soccer fields).  The first hole is situated by the primary parking lot.  You then walk down the paved path to the second tee.  After the 7th hole, you will walk back past the soccer fields and up the path to finish your first round.

BACKGROUND
The World's Biggest is an annual event open to disc golfers of all levels.  Every May, thousands of disc golfers around the world get together at their local courses to take part in the World's Biggest Disc Golf Weekend.  Since 1992, more than 50,000 new players have discovered disc golf through World's Biggest.  Anyone can come out for a day of fun and good times.  This event is a day where disc golf players worldwide can play knowing that everyone who enjoys the sport as much as they do is also playing.  Similar events on going on simultaneously across North America and in far off places such as Sweden, Japan, Finland, Australia, Norway, Australia, and the UK.  The primary focus is to have fun, talk to other players, get some tips and tricks, share some golf stories, and whatever else you can think of, related to the game.  So come on out, bring some friends, make some new ones, and have some good old fashioned fun with us.  We'll be looking forward to seeing you there.

This year, with the help of Disc Golf United, we'll be able to give you a handicap that will let you compare your score with the scores of players all over the world.  After your round, you'll be able to go to the Disc Golf United web site and get a handicap-adjusted score based on your skill level and the difficulty of the course you played.  Disc Golf United's universal handicapping system will let you see if you shot better than your friends who played in other cities… or even other countries.  Furthermore, you'll get a free 3-month trial subscription to DGU, so you can continue to enter your scores, refine your handicap, and play in handicap leagues.
