Current weather forecast for the Ottawa area

The first disc golf course to be built in Kanata is almost a reality.  The baskets have been ordered, the final agreement with the City is almost ready for signing, and sponsors are starting to line up.

The Kanata Course is still looking for Sponsors

If you, or someone know, is interested in helping make the Kanata Course a reality, then please review the sponsorship prospectus.  There are three levels of sponsorship available (a single tee sign, both tee signs on one hole, and the course sponsor - get the course named after your company).  Normally, a sponsor would get one year of advertising, but because the course is later than expected going in the ground, anyone sponsoring now will not have to renew until May 1, 2005.  If you know anyone interested in sponsoring please have them contact Paul Holland.

Sunday September 21, 2003:

The final layout of the course was settled.  The course had a preliminary design (created by Paul Holland and Claus Reitlingshoefer).  On Sept. 21, it was played by 10 experienced disc golfers using portable baskets.  Many thanks to Geoff Penton, Carl Visser, Rob Wormald, Don Lane, and Joel McEwen for the use of their baskets.  The consensus of the players was that the course was an excellent little course.  There were some concerns raised, and some areas to keep an eye on once the course is in the ground.  In the end, there were only three minor modifications made to the layout (two baskets were moved about 10 metres, and one tee was moved back about 15 metres).

Many thanks to everyone who played the course and provided feedback.  The course should be an excellent course for beginners, yet also provide a serious challenge for more advanced players.

Sunday September 28, 2003 at 10:00 AM:

I want to send a HUGE thank you to the 18 people that showed up to help install the basic parts of the Kanata course.

The people who deserve thanks are (and I apologize for any misspellings):

Claus Reitlingshoefer, Don Lane, Ken Darcovich, Kevin Ouellette, John Cuddihey, Geoff Penton, Ben Svetkoff, Mike Harley, Rob Hughes, Tom Goodings, Jeff Hiltz, Rob Wormald, Carl Visser, Michelle Visser, Sean Johnston, Marsha Aldrich, Kevin Grignon, and I was the 18th person - if anyone was counting.

I'm pretty sure I got everyone, but I am very sorry if I missed someone.

The work that was done was auguring holes for the baskets, mixing and pouring cement, pounding in tee signposts, and burying tee 4x4 tee markers.

The installation went very smoothly, and it will make the final part of the installation very easy.  All that is left is bolting the baskets to the anchor points, and attaching the tee signs to their posts.  This final portion is expected to occur on Wednesday, Oct. 8.

Thanks again to everyone for your awesome effort.  It was really nice to have such a huge turn out.

Paul Holland

Wednesday October 8, 2003:

The baskets should be installed - just in time for the Thanksgiving long weekend.  We hope to have the signage complete by then as well, but that is a large task, so the signs may be installed slightly later.

Course Layout

The Kanata Course has nine holes with two tee placements for each hole (recreational and advanced).  The course had to be divided into two sections due to existing park usage (soccer fields).  The first hole will be situated by the primary parking lot.  You must then walk down the path to the second tee.  After the 7th hole, you will walk back past the soccer fields and up the path to finish the round.

Here is the airphoto of the course showing the location of the holes:

Course Location

The Kanata Course is located in Beaverbrook Park in Kanata, Ontario, near the Earl of March High School and the Mlacak Arena, as shown by the red star in the highway map.

To get to the course:

Pull off the Queensway (Hwy 417) at the Eagleson Road off ramp.

If you are coming from Ottawa, then go straight through the first two sets of lights, and turn right into the Mlacak Arena parking lot at the third set of lights.  If you are coming from the West, then turn left onto Eagleson.  Turn left at the next set of lights onto Campeau Drive.  Go straight through the next set of lights and turn right into the Mlacak Arena parking lot at the second set of lights.

Once in the parking lot, you must turn left to go along side the arena, then veer left onto a narrow road that will take you to the parking lot.  For more details, check out our street map.
