With the fall season in full swing and winter approaching it's time to start thinking about disc golf in the off season.
Oh no! you may be thinking, LNF is Ottawa’s last tournament of the year. What will I do from now until spring?
Fear not fellow disc golfer for I have you covered; the Ice League Season will get going on Saturday Oct. 30th 2010 @ Alcove, and every Saturday after until the Ice Bowl in early February.
I will post a schedule of the locations for Ice League and will update it as I gather information.

Who: You! me, anyone who wants to play.
You don’t have to be a member of the ODGC but members get discounts.

When: Saturdays.

Time: Noonish.

Where: Different courses and different layouts, some old some new.

Cost: $6 for the first two weeks, then after it'll depend on your Ice Bowl Registration.
After that the weekly league fee will be $8 or a discounted $6 for those who have pre-registered for the Ice Bowl.

Format: We'll play doubles best-disc style. Doubles teams will be pre-selected at random between two sets of players, the "advanced" and the "intermediates". If you win with one partner, say goodbye to them for the year, as you won't be paired together again.

For the points and the money you'll be ranked in teams against everyone, so the teammates get identical points regardless of whether they play "intermediate" or "advanced".

The goals of Ice League are to have fun in the freakin' cold, as well as stay in shape and in form for next summer, and to add to the value of our donation to the Ice Bowl's charity, the Ottawa Food Bank.

Once again this year, we'll be involved in the country-wide "Great Canadian Ice Bowl Challenge" which we have won two years straight, and the other TDs are gunning for us this year with new ideas on raising money and food, so we'll have to work extra hard as a club to keep up our standing against other Canadian disc golf clubs who want to take our title.

Your top-6 results will count this year on the Ice League ranking, which goes from now until early February.

Up to 3 Mulligans can be purchased each week during regular Ice League events, and the notorious SYN (Screw Your Neighbour) Cards are back with a vengeance:

Mulligan Cards - $2/each or 3/$5
SYN Cards - $3/each or 4/$10

Any one person can only SYN one person per Ice League event. Similarly, any one person can only be SYNned upon once per Ice League event. SYN Cards must be used during Ice League, as they aren't a part of the Ice Bowl. If you don't use all your weekly Mulligans or SYN cards, you can store them for use in a future Ice League Event.

Weekly CTP winners will earn $20 Ice Bucks and are given a “Godfather card” this card negates a SYN card that is tossed at you. And I should add that it is a “one time use” card.

Ice Bucks that you've earned during the season will be given to you at the registration desk at our Ice Bowl. Ice Bucks are the only thing that can be used to purchase our awesome prizes at the Ice Auction.

We also have a weekly Ice Putt event, which gets set up weekly starting at 11:30. You can play up to 3 times weekly, either before or after Ice League for $2/round (or 3 rounds for $5). Weekly winners get half the pot and 10 Ice Bucks. There is a ranking for this as well, and the top-6 on it will get awarded more Ice Bucks at the end of the season.

I will announce more things later, as this post is long enough.

The Ice Bowl cometh!

We are kicking off Ottawa's Ice League this weekend (Sat. Oct. 30) at Stacie's place in Alcove.

DIRECTIONS TO THE ALCOVE:

Address for Google maps/GPS usage; 44 chemin Echo Dale, la Pêche, QC

Get on Highway 5 as if you were heading to Camp Fortune but don’t exit at Old Chelsea, instead continue until the end of HWY 5 where there is a T intersection with a set of lights turn left on to HWY 105N.

Stay on this highway (the 105 north), until the next big intersection (they are few and far between on this road, in case you miss it, you'll see a Giant Tiger on the right).
Turn right at that intersection and go down the hill into the pretty village of Wakefield.

At the bottom of said hill, you will come to another T-intersction, go left. Stay on this road, it will take you through the village. On the far side of the village there is another intersection, go straight, heading north, still following the Maniwaki signs. (The course is about a 6 minute drive from this intersection).

You're back on the 105 heading north and the highway eventually splits into a four-lane and up ahead, looming on the left, you will see a massive sandpit. Turn left onto the dirt road (Chemin Echo Dale) when you get to the pit. Stacie's driveway is the first driveway on the right, which is half a click from the highway.

It is a long driveway, and you can't see the house until the end of the driveway (if you have 4 wheel drive you might like to use it now). Park when you get to the house.

Note to everyone: Stacie has tonal poles, not baskets... they're better for your aim.

ADVISORIES:

Dress appropriately. It's a big course; imagine playing a round at League Night Finals, with more up and downs. With that being said, dressing to stay warm is the way to go.
Also hunting season has started in QC so we have been advised to wear flashy colors so break out that pink 80’s onezie that you’ve been dying to wear. big grin

*** Wear proper footwear *** This course has some rough terrain comparable to Fortune.

Hope to see you all out here on Saturday!

The first Ice League of the 2010-2011 season was a complete success with
10 golfers braving the elements at the very scenic Alcove course.

The competition was fierce as the pairings were evenly matched but it was
the team of Claus and Stacie that took top honors with some solid play.

1. Stacie S. & Claus R. (52, -2)
2. Adam C. & Don L. (55, +1)
3. Holly D. & Geoff P. (56, +2)
4=. Ben S. & Gavin S. (57, +3)
4=. Kristina W. & Andrew V. (57, +3)

I'll post up the IL point standings after week 2 as it's more interesting that way. smile

Ben won the CTP on hole #2 that earned him a Godfather card. (I still owe you the card.)

Holly won the Ice Putt competition with some long putts. Way to go Holly! (I owe you some $ for the Ice Putt)

Also worth noting Don aced hole 12 which is quite impressive for those who know the course.
Unfortunately there will be no Ace pot for this season’s Ice League but I encourage
folks to pay up a fiver if you’re on that card.

Ice League this Saturday November 6th will be tentatively held at Rockcliffe Park
in the east end on the same layout we used last year. The course uses a combination of objects
and temp baskets and is a lot of fun especially when the leaves have fallen.

I have yet to scout Rockcliffe Park this season so expect the unexpected.
Any recent updates about the park is appreciated as I am unlikely to go there anytime this week.
Don has mentioned that the parking lot closes once the snow flies so I’m not sure if they’ve closed it or not.
If the parking lot is closed we will play elsewhere…

Stay tuned for more updates.

Same layout as last year. Possibly some tee-pad tweakage.

Don Lane wrote:
1 - 395' from the Pavillion to a concealed target behind a grove of trees
2 - 215' uphill to a target on the Upper Deck plateau
3 - 380' from an elevated teepad across the field to a target on a rolling slope
4 - 360' from the green area back towards the Upper Deck to a large target
5 - 340' anhyzer down a wide grassy road back to a natural target on the edge - SPOTTERS REQUIRED
6 - 280' agressive hyzer ace potential with OB road on the right
7 - 285' tight downhill tunnel shot, gently fading to one side
8 - 270' uphill tunnel shot up the same tight lane, gently fading the other way
9 - 325' wider tunnel shot on higher ground overlooking nasty treefilled slope, protected from and below the road level, favours lefties and flicksters.

These were the measured distances for the last time this layout was used. This year, we'll have some holes that tee up from a longer distance in Round 2. All holes are Par-3, for a total of Par-54.

going to the park sometime today (i hope) and will post some more details.

The second Ice League of the 2010-2011 season was a popular one with
16 golfers! invading Rockcliffe park.

The layout was a slightly tweaked version of the original and produced a variety of scores. The top two teams took home $24 or $12 each, here are the results of the eight pairings after 18 holes.

1=. Ryan Briggs & Shane Kilpatrick (50, -4)
1=. Kyle Fisher & Jeff Lariviere (50, -4)
3. Adam Crupi & Gavin Shnobb (52, -2)
4=. Stacie Sivyer & Andrew Vallee (54, Even)
4=. Mark Atos & Cyle Prang (54, Even)
6. Drazen Djokic & Mike McCormick (56, +2)
7. Holly DeCoste & Ken Darcovich (58, +4)
8. Tom Vigna & Ben Svetkoff (61, +7)

I'll post up the IL point standings as soon as I figure out how to upload PDF files to the website. (If anyone knows how pls. PM me.)

OMR won the CTP prize on hole #5 a DX Sidewinder and nested mini set.
Kkyle won the CTP on hole #6 that earned him a Godfather card.
(I still owe you the card and your IL winnings.)

McMike won the Ice Putt competition and earned himself a cool $16. Well done Mike.

Ice League this Saturday November 13th will be held at the Kanata Disc Golf course
at Beaverbrook park in (duh) Kanata using the current course layout.

Ice putt at 11:30 tee off at noonish as always. If anyone is running late call me on my cell, if you don't know my cell number pm me.

As soon as Colin uploads the standings I will post them up; they include
the current IL points standings as well as the Ice putt standings.

Come one come all it's going to be a beautiful day.

The third Ice League of the 2010-2011 season, held at the Kanata Disc Golf Course, brought out a dozen Ottawa golfers in the mild November weather.

The teams were well balanced as shown by the results below;

1. Lindsay Allen & Geoff Penton (43, -11)
2=. Jeff Lewis & Shane Kilpatrick (44, -10)
2=. Cyle Prang & Andrew Vallee (44, -10)
2=. Stacie Sivyer & Rob Doucette (44, -10)
5. Holly DeCoste & Claus Reitlingshoefer (45, -9)
6. Ben Svetkoff & Gavin Schnobb (47, -7)

I'll post up the IL point standings hopefully tomorrow.

Ice League this Saturday November 20th will be held at the Shire, a private course belonging to Rob “Twirly” Wormald. The Shire’s address is 3489 Old Almonte Rd. for those unfamiliar with the location using Google maps or a GPS. We will be using the current layout that has two fresh new tees.

The fourth Ice League of the 2010-2011 season, held at the Shire, brought
out 20 golfers on a gusty Saturday in November.

Here are the scoring results;
1=. Gavin Schnobb & Geoff Rowland (51, -3)
1=. Ryan Briggs & Rob Wormald (51, -3)
1=. Serge Seguin & Carl Visser (51, -3)
1=. John Howcroft & Jeff Lariviere (51, -3)
5. Claude Doucette & Shane Kilpatrick (53, -1)
6. Mark Atos & Geoff Penton (54, Even)
7. Holly DeCoste & Claus Reitlingshoefer (55, +1)
8. Jess Chartrand & Ken Darcovich (56, +2)
8. Stacie Sivyer & Eric Vinet (56, +2)
10. Ben Svetkoff & Andrew Vallee (57, +3)

I will give out 1st place points to those teams tied with 51
as the playoff was just for the cash.

I'll post up the standings tomorrow or Wed.

***PLEASE NOTE***
Ice League this Saturday November 27th has had a change of location as
we are heading to Vincent Massey Park.

This Saturday morning I will need some help setting up a 9 hole course
with 2 tees by tossing out portable baskets. I already have 4 plus the Ice putt basket, 5....
So I'm putting a call out for 4 more portable and/or metal baskets to make 9 so we can make this happen.

As stated, the map for this Saturday's venture at Vincent Massey Park;

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

You may notice that there is two different hole nine's, 9 and 9b.

I will make a decision the morning of as to what hole we will play, it all depends on how full the parking lot is.

All tees and pin positions are subject to change so just use this for reference.

I will try have some printed out for Saturday but If you are able please print extras it is much appreciated.

The fifth Ice League of the 2010-2011 season, held at the Vincent Massey Park,
brought out 15 golfers on the first snowy Saturday of the season.

Here are the scoring results based on the par 57 layout;
1. Geoff Penton & Geoff Penton (48, -9)
2. Mark Atos & Andrew Vallee (50, -7)
3. Ben Svetkoff & Don Lane (51, -6)
4. Mike McCormick & Ryan Briggs (52, -5)
5. Holly DeCoste & Claus Reitlingshoefer (53, -4)
6. Stacie Sivyer & Jeff Lariviere (54, -3)

Bonus points were awarded to those in ATTENDANCE in accordance to the IL rules of the first snowfall.

***PLEASE NOTE***
Ice League this Saturday December 4th will be held at the Ettyville Disc Golf course and
will have an early start time because of the logistics involved with an Ettyville golf day.

Ice Putt and registrations will be done at 10:30am and
we will promptly tee off at 11:00am.

Any late arrivals should call me as I may leave scorecards on my car so
that you can partner up with who you arrive with.
But be aware that it does get dark at 4:30pm so if you start late you might not finish in the daylight.

Standings are now up to date;

Up-to-date Ice League Ranking

NOTE: There are a few errors in the # of events played category but everything else is correct.

John has updated me with the course conditions at Ettyville and he says it is quite wet and doesn't think that it will dry/freeze up in the next day or so.

So we will head to Kanata using the current course layout.

I thank everyone for their patience in the matter.

***PLEASE NOTE***

The price for Ice League has gone up from $6 to $8 unless you have pre-paid for the 2011 Ottawa Ice Bowl. This is in effort to get appropriate numbers for the Ice Bowl so that i can order players packs and such.

Other prices of things like Mullys and SYNs remain the same.

The following people have pre-paid for the 2011 Ottawa Ice Bowl;

Andrew Vallee
Don Lane
Holly DeCoste
Cyle Prang
Stacie Sivyer
Gavin Schnobb
Mike Mccormick

Ice League this Saturday, December 11th will be held at Queensway Park
with the help of Eric "Disco Rico" Vinet. This is a temp course so I will need some help with basket donations;
I have 4 + Ice putt basket 5, so I need 4 more portable baskets. (5 would be ideal)

Ice Putt and registrations as always will be done at 11:30am and
we will start it up at noon o'clock.

I will post more details about Queensway park during the week as well as a map of the course.

Back to business here is the map of where to park for this Saturday's IL;

The parking lot is an OC transpo park and ride so parking is free but there
might be other cars there, not sure how many but we should be ok.

Also i am still in need of 3 more portable baskets for this Saturday to run IL.
