The Canadian Golf and Country Club Yellows

Hardest to Easiest
Using Standard Deviation
(Standard Deviation is used to rank the holes toughness. The more clustered the scores are on a hole, then the SD is lower, therefore stating that this hole is "easier".)

6th - #8
7th - #5
8th - #11

Plaid #1 and #2

#1 basket sits up on a elevated green with the sandtrap "cutting" into the DG green. The rules about landing in a ST haven't been published yet so the dangers aren't known yet. The ST will probably stop discs coming in too low and if you're coming in hot you may skip into the ST. This hole will be all about the second shot.

#2 basket sits just out of reach for most Ottawa golfers and having to hit a gap about 200' down the fairway will make this a hard birdie hole. #2 is a classic DG hole and for a bit you'll forget you're on a white ball course.

The knarly tree in the fairway will guide your first shot into the gap.

With only a very quick drive by of these two holes I can only say that they will be a working-man par. Hole #4's 404 feet is probably not offering many a birdie bid especially with the elevated "nob" green. Without a view from the tee (which I guessed where it is on the map based on the Designers drawings) I don't know how acurate of a shot you'll need but once you're out in the WB fairway you'll have nothing in the way to the green. Putting will be key.

#5 is a complete mystery to me. I think Ben pointed out the green to me when we first got there, but I didn't have any bearings so I can't offer much up, except that a 4 will feel good, and a 3 will feel freakin amazing. Second shot will probably be key.

These are classic American DG holes. You'll love playing them, but you'll be frustrated with your score. Avery will 2 #4 and be frustrated with his 3 on #5.

850' and it'll all come down to your 3rd or 4th shot. The Plaid Designers have you playing the fairway of WB #6 so there's a lot of room out there. But the heart rate will pick up when you get 200' from the basket which will probably sit about 20 feet off the pond. Some decisions will need to be made after your second shot. Wow.

Regardless, you're throwing a disc over the pond. The green is lush lawn grass and I think it'll grab your discs. Being too agressive may end you on one of two WB greens that are in the vicinity. Cart path is IB.

This is were the WB course joins us for the first time. This is the time to turn it on and impress the stick and ball players.

Another, "I forgot I was playing on a WB course" hole.

#8 might be my favourite hole on the course (probably a good thing too, as you've just walked/carted about 200m from the green of #7)

From the shorts it's this wonderful "approach" shot for a two. And from the longs you just want to get it to the shorts for that same shot you made the round before.

A really nice ani-drive from the longs, through the tree tunnel and around the bend (I can see Carl doing it, and I'll be practicing my long distance flicks for this shot) could reward the top golfers with a chance for an Eagle 2. It's so pretty. So pretty in fact, the longs are also the Super 6 #4.

The pond.

You can't be a DG designer and walk past a pond (especially if said designer is the owner of a disc golf store Wink )

This will get played by EVERYONE 3 TIMES. It's the Blues and the Yellows; the Shorts and Longs; a Mullet Hole.

The evening I was out there there was a small breeze coming across the pond. For our sake, let's hope that's the direction it'll be blowing on the 3rd.

The basket is very safe from the pond, and you can cheat all you want to the bank. The bank though, does rise about 4-5 feet from the water line, acting as a wall for low drives.

The ani/flick/lefty route is very safe too, except you're shooting into the direction of the pond.

A longer pin placement will be used for the Super 6 #5. Same tee.

#10.

It started out as a "connector" hole to get us to the WB #9 fairway to get us back to the Clubhouse, but Ben, Twirly and Rox worked out a pretty decent hole with several options.

An out-and-around the guard trees ani will be very pretty to watch. If it doesn't fade out there might some exciting finishes--if they don't hit the small pine tree sentries on and around the green.

For the rest of us, it's up the gut 289 feet.

The Designers ran into a bit of a problem coming into the last stretch. The East Course #9 is pretty wide open. There were three evergreens sitting over to the side and pretty much demanded a basket to be placed among them. How to get to it was the debate.

The Red tee you see in the picture is a raised gold/back tee for #9 and is sitting right beside a picture perfect bridge. This is were Twirly and I threw our first (and only) discs of the evening. The gold tee was too far for a good par 3, and too close for a good par 4, but it's going to be perfect for the last hole on the Super Sexy 6.

Twirly found an old WB tee pad and really, when you find something like that you use it. The longs are at the back end of it, and the shorts at the front. It's a pretty simple and straight forward DG hole. The Designers could have completely messed with you, but the cart path is IB. thumbsup

Pretty straight forward from the tee, keep it on the fairway. There's a cart path, IB, and a sloshy creek, IB, and woods on both sides, IB. Stay off of those and you're golden.

Now though, what do you do for your second shot?

The basket is in a birch stand in some long grass. There are a lot of gaps, but with gaps comes obstacles. Lot's of options though, and remember, it's a par 4 from the longs.

Oh, I've circled the white marker in the middle of the WB fairway. It stands for something I'm sure.

I figure a solid round of Blues, in a Plaid atmosphere, with an average wind, might score in the low 30s (probably a 33). If someone shoots in the twenties there may be some urine testing going on.

Best Score from Blues - 35 from Thumber, in the First round

Yellows might get a few nibbles at a 33-35, but I would guess a 37-38 would be a leading score.

Thanks for the breakdown Geoff. While standard deviation will show volatility on a hole, I'm not convinced it's a good measure for average hole difficulty. For example, #4 is down as the second easiest hole for both groups of players, yet it had the highest average over par than any other hole. Using average over par, we get a much different picture for hole difficulty.

All Players:

Hardest - #4
2nd - #5
3rd - #7
4th - #9
5th - #2
6th - #3
7th - #6
8th - #12
9th - #10
10th - #11
11th - #1
Easiest - #8

Top 10 Players:

Hardest - #4
2nd - #5
3rd - #3
4th - #12
5th - #6
6th - #9
7th - #2
8th - #11
9th - #10
10th - #7
11th - #1
Easiest - #8

Draw your own conclusions.

Very nice stats BBP. They will certainly come in handy for making course tweaks for next year.

It seems that it wasn't my imagination that a lot of the holes played really long (ie tough to reach) making birdies a rare event. Specifically #2, #3 & #4 as well as some others. It was a learning experience for all of us.

#4 is an interesting one. No one 2d it from either pad. Was it because of the hump green? Was it too far? Was it too close (for a par 4)? Was it the wind?

I know I just laid up for an easy three every round.

I tried to throw a thumber over the top from the shorts....too much wind...short...get a 3

Went long hyzer from the longs, laid up due to the hump....got a 3 both times

It was pretty far to 2 from the longs , and not sure there was a good enough line to take the risk from the shorts
