The Andrews Journal - Disc Golf course coming to park
Quote:
Eli Fowler, who works at Whitewater Rafting in Granny Squirrel, never played much disc golf until recently. But once his company put a course on the grounds of their Ocoee River location, he got hooked.

So hooked that he’s spear-headed a campaign to bring the game to Andrews. And he’s confident that once it’s here, others will become just as interested in the game as he is.

“Once I saw how easy and inexpensive it is to put up a course, I thought it would be a great thing to have in Andrews,” Fowler said. “I can’t really think of anything else you can put up so cheaply that benefits everybody, from kids to seniors.”

Austin Daily Herald - Disc Golf Course Gets Makeover
Quote:
The redesign will also eliminate two of the northern-most holes near the junk yard, meaning less grass for city workers to mow. This will also make the course more efficient and walkable for players, Johnsen said.

Johnsen said the project will use up much of a $1,500 fund set up by local disc golfers. However, courtesy of a grant through the Minnesota Frisbee Association, $500 of that tab should be picked up. Most MFA grants are for $250, but Johnsen said special consideration was given to Todd Park because of the tornado damage.

“They just want to help courses around Minnesota,” he added.

Also offering a great deal of help with the project has been the Austin Parks and Recreation Department. Johnsen said local disc golfers are responsible to pay for materials, but department crews will take care of the actual construction and renovation. And both Johnsen and Linnett were pleasantly surprised to learn Wednesday that the workers wanted to get the Todd Park job in this week — much earlier than the two expected

North County Times - SAN MARCOS: University opens disc golf course: 18-hole site designed, built with donated funds
Quote:
At a cost of more than $20,000, the course was designed and built entirely with donated funds. As part of a graduate school project, Monica Watkins of Vista took on the task of finding donors. She said she searched for people she thought would have an affinity for the university.

"Whether it was community members who had an interest in the university or disc golf, I was looking for people who were interested in student success," said Watkins, a graduate of UC San Diego.

Dr. Karen Haynes, president of CSUSM, said that the new course will provide a wonderful opportunity to bring community to everyone on the campus and a new way for students who might not get involved with other sports to really find recreation and fitness.

Morganton The New Herald - Tourney teaches students to give back
Quote:
With more than 900 volunteer hours under their belt, Timothy Barnsback's eighth-grade students at Liberty Middle School can serve even more hours at their teacher's charity event.

Timothy Barnsback, a social studies teacher at Liberty, said to support the students' volunteering efforts he, along with fellow teachers Paul Gantt and Matt Langlais, organized the Foothills Conservancy Open, a disc golf tournament, on Saturday. It will be held in conjunction with the City of Morganton's Earth Day festivities.

The event, sponsored by The Chain Slayers Disc Golf Club, is at Catawba Meadows disc golf course on Sanford Drive. Three classes (pro, intermediate and amateur) are offered and registration is from 8:30 until 9:30 a.m. Saturday.

The tournament fee is $25 and includes a custom tourney disc. All funds raised will go to the Foothills Conservancy.
