Our first regular week of Ice League will kick off next Saturday, although those who attended FFFM will again lead us off with random teams being made from the high and low scores of the first round. The teams from FFFM will be randomly drawn next week at Ice League.

This year is our 8th annual Ice Bowl and we'll be counting your top-8 results over the league events that you attend from now until the Ice Bowl which will be held on Saturday, Feb. 7th, 2009.

In addition to FFFM, there will be 12 regular weeks using the regular scoring system + 1 bonus week on Dec. 27th which counts only for participation points.

Players will again be placed in to two tiers, and randomized teams will be formed from these two tiers each week. Play will be best-disc at each event, with California Doubles being used for the solo player when we have an odd numbered turnout.

Special prizes will be awarded to both the Ice League Champion and the top-8 players in the series. The Ice League point system is based on the one used in the Can-Am series, and goes like this for an event with 20 teams (or individuals at the Ice Bowl itself):

# Basic Part Bonus Ttl Pts
1 100 20 20 140
2 95 19 19 133
3 90 18 18 126
4 86 17 17 120
5 82 16 16 114
6 78 15 15 108
7 74 14 14 102
8 70 13 13 96
9 67 12 12 91
10 64 11 11 86
11 61 10 10 81
12 58 9 9 76
13 55 8 8 71
14 52 7 7 66
15 50 6 6 62
16 48 5 5 58
17 46 4 4 54
18 44 3 3 50
19 42 2 2 46
20 40 1 1 42

1-3 5 pts
4-8 4 pts
9-14 3 pts
15-25 2 pts
26 + 1 pt

In other words, if you place in the top-3 at any weekly event, the spread between your basic points is 5, while it goes down to 4-pt gaps for placing between 4th and 8th, etc...

On the special round on Dec. 27th, given that a reduced number of players will be in the area, only participation points are given for that special Ice League event.

On the first day where there is "significant" snow on the ground, or falling during the round, DOUBLE bonus points will be awarded to the players (who showed that they were neither wimps nor whiners).

Here's how we did last year at our final Ice Bowl event at Jacques Cartier Park:

Tournament Summary Ottawa Ice Bowl VII

Snow depth: 22"
Number of Players: 34
Temperature: -6ºC / 21ºF
Food donated: 540 lbs
Cash donated: $2,428

While impressive, these stats were only good enough for 2nd place in the Great Canadian Ice Bowl Challenge, with Durham Bridge, NB beating everyone across the country, and Calgary once again kicking our collective butts in fundraising. With your help this year, we'll be back on top, but that means more work has to go in to the financial side of things.

When you sign up for the Ice Bowl, you'll be offered an optional fundraising form which you can use to help out our series charity, The Ottawa Food Bank, whose Executive Director, Peter Tilley, is also the first person to sign up again for the Ice Bowl. Those forms will be e-mailed to you directly upon request and your pre-registration to the Ice Bowl.

The weekly series fee remains the same as last year: $6 for those who have pre-registered for the Ice Bowl and $8 for those who have not yet signed up. This only goes in to effect after the first 2 Ice Leagues, in order to give people a couple of chances to pay for the Ice Bowl. For the first 2 regular weeks, it will be $6 for everyone. Your pre-registrations allow us to order your player packs and purchase items for the Ice Auction, so it is very much appreciated if you could pre-register early.

Payouts from that $6 go like this: $3 to the winning teams, $2 to the charity, and $1 to the Ice League Ace Pot. After the first two regular events, the extra $2 for non-paid Ice Bowl players goes to the charity.

We will also be holding weekly Ice Putt events, which are $2/round or 3 rounds for $5. Half of the weekly $ goes to the winner, with the other half to the charity.

We will have Mulligans and SYN Cards available for sale at last year's prices: $2/Mulligan (or 3 for $5), and SYN Cards for $3 (or 2 for $5). A maximum of 3 Mulligan Cards or 2 SYN Cards can be purchased per week, but if you don't use them, they will carry over to other Ice League events. An individual player can use as many Mulligan Cards as they have, but only a maximum of 2 SYN Cards per week. Any one individual can only be Synned against 1 time per week.

Mulligan Card = Do any shot over again.... you'll get it right this time, right? Smile

SYN Card = An acronym for "Screw Your Neighbour" - these powerful cards negate a competing players' shot, even if they've used a Mulligan Card. being evil

Godfather Card = A card that negates the use of any Mulligan or SYN Card, or any regular throw. Godfather Cards are not available for sale, but are earned weekly as CTP prizes at Ice League events. These cards are good at all future Ice League events (even rolling from year to year) if they aren't used. Once used, they get ripped up. Razz

The Ice Bowl will have its own unique Mulligan Card, and no SYN Cards or Godfather Cards will be used at the Ice Bowl. The proceeds from all cards goes straight to our charity... and remember... we've got to beat Calgary and the NB groups, so get your cards regularly!

This year, the first Ice League will be held at the Kanata course, with the initial Ice Putt competition available for you starting at 11:30. Registration closes at noon. We should be underway by 12:15 each and every week.

Final results from last year, where Rolly won both the series and the Ice Bowl:

Who's going to win it all this year?

I walked the course a few days ago with Paul Holland, and we found a few good spots for some additional holes which will make the flow of the course better given the current problems with construction.

The only hole we won't be able to play is #9. We'll add a new 1A and a 7A, which will follow holes #1 and #7.

This will make it a 10-hole course which we'll play twice for a total of 20 holes.

I'll be there early to drop my temp basket, and to lay down some teemarkers for those who aren't familiar with the normal layout.

I'm looking for one more basket though - could someone please let me know if you could come with one?

The inaugural Ice Putt competition starts at 11:30, and can be played from then until we start, or after you've completed the 20 hole course.

Many thanks,

~Don~

Yes, the first full Ice League event of the season will happen on Saturday, the 8th at the Kanata course.

I'm looking for one more temp basket for the event.

Don't make me have to drive to Carp that morning to borrow a Caza basket!

Thanks - hope to see you there!

Wish I could help you out Dandy, but both my baskets are in that Carp place you speak of. Unless you want a fold up one...I got three of those at my school.

Would a DGA mach lite portable do?

Are you using it for the Ice putt or one of the temp holes?

A fold up one would be fine - Geoff and Andy - not sure which style is the best between those two - maybe between the two of you you can decide which one to bring.

I ordered 3 new portables from Twirly, but they won't be here in time for this event.

The Ice Putt will likely be set up on a permanent basket at Hole #1.

Andy - if you were planning on attending, could you please bring your basket?

I'll put it in a pretty well protected spot, as it will be 7A, which has the basket protected by a circle of trees around it.

Change of plans, I'm going back home tomorrow to get my winter tires put on. So there's a chance I might miss league.

You can either pick up my basket today before 2:45pm or get another one.
I think Thumber and OMR have the same basket.

So you can hassle them if you want. sly wink

We played "The Kanata 21 ", with some modifications to the teepad for Hole #9. We placed one temp-basket in the raised and protected circle grove and played it from three different teepads, in addition to playing the regular course. On hole #9, we pulled the pad back to about 5m from the path, with the construction area OB and never went OB (in fact, the card took 3 drop-in birdies on that hole, which is a tough one).

The birdies and the extra-long putts were sinking like wild, well, except out of my hand. Darco had 7 of them, and took 1st place on the day. I squeaked ahead of Zonker to take 2nd. Rod and I tied in the Ice Putt.

Playing conditions were excellent
, as the forecasted rain ended well before the Ice Putt was set up. Too bad there weren't more of us out there.

Rolly - can you please send OMR in your card's results from FFFM, as I need it for the Ice League ranking.

Darco won $9, to be delivered by Zonker. The Godfather Card was won by Splash.

Ice League has been cancelled for the next two weeks.

It will resume on Saturday, Nov. 29th.

We'll reduce the number of events which will count on the rankings to what it was last year (7) to compensate for the fewer number of weeks in the series.

Sorry for the inconvenience. See you in a couple of weeks!
