Here’s a look at one player’s season record that shows what it takes to change your handicap. In this table below, Score is the round score, C H is the course handicap, Slope is the course slope (which is 113 by default, 145 for the shortened round at Camp Fortune early in the season), Diff is the differential scored during the round, n Diff is the number of differentials used to calculate the handicap, (Avg) is the raw average, and Handicap is the average of the n Diff best differentials, rounded down.

Penton, Geoff
Score C H Slope Diff n Diff (Avg) Handicap
54 45 113.0 9.0
58 45 113 13.0
56 45 113 11.0 1 (9) 9
59 45 113 14.0 1 (9) 9
57 45 113 12.0 2 (10) 10
Geoff began the season with 5 rounds on record from his league night play prior to the beginning of the season. All of these were from the yellow teepads. His handicap was the average of his two best differentials (11 and 9), which gave him a player handicap at the start of the season of 10.
57 40.1 113 16.9 2 (10) 10
56 43.5 113 12.5 3 (10.7) 10
45 40.1 113 4.9 3 (8.3) 8
Geoff’s 45 from the blues during the third round of the season saw his handicap drop two strokes in one round. He then kept up the pace with solid rounds at Camp Fortune an back at Jacques Cartier park.
44 37.1 145.3 8.9 4 (8.5) 8
50 40.1 113 9.9 4 (8.2) 8
60 43.5 113 16.5 4 (8.2) 8
47 43.5 113 3.5 5 (7.2) 7
Geoff then turned in a great round at Jacques Cartier Park which brought his handicap down one stroke further.
61 51 113 10.0 5 (7.2) 7
52 43.5 113 8.5 5 (6.9) 6
Even though his latest round saw him receive a differential higher than his handicap, it was the fifth-best of his best 5 rounds, and knocked his previous 5th place differential of 9.9 out of the equation, dropping his differential average to 6.9, which is rounded down to 6.
What’s it going to take for Geoff to keep his handicap at 6? He can do it if he manages to shoot a round in of 58 or better at Camp Fortune this coming Tuesday. It would take a three-stroke improvement over his last round from the long teepads at the mountain.
