O CANADA, EAST COAST STYLE

And so it begins! The Maritime Disc Golf Association has won the right to host the Canadian Disc Golf National Championship at Hillcrest Farms Disc Golf Course (plus some surprises of course). Its only fitting that we use, in our opinion, Canadas best course, to showcase Canadas sweetest spot (thats right west coast I said it, the Maritimes are sweeter then you, even with snow). Were thrilled to have the opportunity to host this event and give the wider disc golf audience a chance to see what were playing with here, while at the same time showing our players what the word of disc golf looks like. We have already had some top Pros commit to playing our event and we have so many surprises for the traveling player that im considering moving away just so I can come home for this.

For now lets keep it simple. The event will be from Sept 14-16, 2018 with the main events happening in Bonshaw PEI. If you need help travel (plane tickets etc.) we have an agency for that! Call our friends at The Travel Store, toll free at that! 1 800 565 5404. As for lodging we have Lords Seaside Cabins onboard to host as many players as possible so you will want to touch base with Elayne (Lord) as soon as you can.

http://www.lordsseasidecottages.com/main-page.html

We will also be hosting a Saturday night banquet there open to all players for all divisions (friends can come but there will be a fee for non-players). The entire week will be filled with disc golf goodies, doubles events from Monday-Thursday, a C-tier flex start on Thursday, and the opening of a brand new permanent course on the island (more details to come but I can already tell youre excited!!). If you have ever been on the fence of making the trip east (or north) this is as much of a tipping point as I can make for you.

The first Monday of every month from here on out will also feature news and a fundraiser draw so keep you eyes peeled. Other than that get practising we want yall at your best.

CANADIAN DISC GOLF NATIONALS UPDATE:

Welcome to the first installment of our monthly news, notes, and next up section.

The Main Sponsor:
Let's kick this round off with some important news. We have a main sponsor!
It's always a pleasure to announce our favourite company is going to be the principal sponsor of our biggest event and that is what we are doing today.

Dynamic Discs is back again teaming up with the MDGA to make great things fly in the Maritimes. With Dynamic Disc's goodies around, you know your player's pack will be worth it's weight in gold.

The Name:
We are also very excited to announce that our A-Tier event will be named "The Nor'easter" and will become an annual event going forward from this year's National Championships. It will be known informally as Canada's biggest 'eh' tier. Folks from around here know there is no storm quite like a Nor'easter, and no event quite like ours. Storm chips will be provided in the case of an actual Nor'easter.

The Courses:
The Nor'Easter will feature two amazing permanent coursers located 25 km apart in the heart of Prince Edward Island. The 5-star pro layout at Hillcrest Farm Disc Golf Course in Bonshaw will be the professional player's main home (2/3 founds) but in addition we are please to announce that the "Huck-it Disc Golf Course" in Middleton will be ready to play in plenty of time for the Nationals. Once you have experienced this beauty it will make leaving "The Island" that much harder. This course is a privately owned gem, built, designed, and maintained by local island disc golfer and farmer, Charlie Mccardle. Amateur players will play there for their Friday and Sunday rounds, while getting a crack at the Hillcrest Farm short tees on Saturday.

The Video Crew:
We are all very happy to announce that Central Coast Disc Golf has been contracted to provide next day videos of the lead card(s) on all three rounds. Want to gain some fame in the disc golf world? Play your way to the top of the MPO division, but you're going to have to get through some world-class competition to get there (more on that at a later date).

Next up: Fundraiser Random Draw Time
At the start of each month, and sometimes in between, we are going to post up a sweet item(s) that we've got, and we'll give you 50 numbers to win it. Each number is $10 or 3 numbers for $25. Once those 50 are spoken for, we'll spin the big wheel and send the prize(s) to their new homes. First up on the block is a brand new Dynamic Discs Recruit Basket delivered to your home. In our opinion, these are the best portable baskets on the market and a great first step for anyone who wants to spend the winter channelling their "inner Ricky". Check out the Maple Disc Waffles page on Facebook - watch for it soon.

Canadian Nationals monthly update:

Happy December everybody! Do we have some good news for you? Why yes, thanks for asking! Two of our favourite pros will be joining us for the 2018 Canadian Nationals. Welcome to the Maritimes 4x Womens Pro Open World Champion, Paige Pierce, and the 2017 USDGC champion, Nate Sexton.

Paige turned Pro in 2009 and has been on a quite a run ever since. She won the 2011 Canadian Disc Golf Championship and her first ever PDGA World Championship title in 2011 and has won Worlds in every odd year since, (2013, 2015 & 2017). Her infectious smile and passion for the game has made her a fan favourite. Currently ranked as the top-female player in the world, she is a gracious winner and a fierce competitor who represents the game of disc golf in the best possible manner. Her impact will be felt deeply here for years to come and we are thrilled to have her be a part of this special event.

Currently ranked #3 in the world, Sexton is another fan favourite that we are beyond excited to be hosting. The 2003 Junior Boys World Champion finally tapped into his beard power and won his major as a pro this year taking the title of United States Disc Golf Champion. A few years back, our TD, Ben Smith, was attending a clinic Nate and Paul were hosting and as luck would have it he found himself in a good conversation with Nate and his wife. They talked about growth of the game, women in sport, and what they could do to make a positive impact. Since that day Nate and Ben have been discussing a way to have him experience what the Maritimes has to offer and we can now happily say that day has arrived. Soon we will be able to answer the question, would Nate be able to flick a firebird to the pin from here? Hole 7 at Hillcrest is waiting
Each Pro will be hosting a workshop during nationals week. We also have some other goodies planned too and we will be sure to let you know the details when its time.

In other exciting news we have a new major sponsor. Welcome back Upstreet Brewing! Although Upstreet has only been around for a few years they have done a ton to give back to the community. The provincial government recently recognized them as a certified B Corporation, which is a title that signifies they are using their force for good positive social and environmental change in the world. Also they make great beer! Look for yearlong specials at Upstreet for MDGA members and weeklong specials for Nationals. Our players meeting and early check-in will also be hosted here on Thursday night. If this is your first stop when you get to the island you are going to have a good time!

https://www.upstreetcraftbrewing.com

We have had a great response to lodging, so great that Lords Seaside Cabins are sold out! Dont fret though, as Elayne is still booking cottages for us in the surrounding area so give her a call at 1.888.228.6765. We will also have additional lodging in Charlottetown but we will fill you in on the details in the new year. Dont forget if you are flying you can book your tickets through our sponsors at The Travel Store 1.800.565.5404. We are trying to make your travel plans as easy as possible so all you have to do is get here.

Things have been moving along smoothly on our end. The MDGA has hosted a couple of wildly successful fundraiser events. Never underestimate the power of $2 SYN shots! This month we are going to give away a Stoke (black and yellow) Dynamic Discs Ranger bag, which will be filled will the same discs as in Paige Pierces bag. Look for it on the Maple Disc Golf Waffles Page here:

https://www.facebook.com/groups/359550461085231/

Happy winter disc golfing everybody! Lets keep this thing flying!

Hello folks!

For those of us in the north welcome to the winter disc golf season. Keep warm and throw often. We will keep this update brief so we can all go back to warming our hands by the fire.

We have had a lot of interest from Pros from all over the world and we are expecting a great turnout. We have been in talks to add a third course if needed and our group is committed to making 2018 the biggest and best Canadian Nationals to date. As mentioned in a previous update the main cottages at Lords Seaside Cabins are all booked, but you can still call Elayne (1 888 228 6765) to have her book you a cottage close by. We have also been working on lodging in the city of Charlottetown. We will update you as soon as this has been finalized.

Internationally renowned course designer John Houck designed our main course, Hillcrest Farm, and we recently asked him for some feedback on it since his recent visit this past summer. John replied with I put Hillcrest Farm in my personal top tier of courses Ive been involved with. Its in the same league as the Selah courses, Harmony Bends, and Frost Valley, for example. It has some of my favorite holes, and I think it matches my best work as far as challenge, fun, fairness, variety, and beauty. And, like any top-rated course, it has that additional X factor theres just something about the place and the people that lets you know youre about to have a special experience, even before you step onto the course. Were very excited that Hillcrest farm will be hosting the Canadian Nationals, and were glad to know that a whole new group of players will get to experience the magic of the venue the Best family has created.

We have also had some great success with local sponsors and we are happy to share these good folks with you, when you are in town be sure to check out as many of them as you can.

You already know our main sponsor but just to refresh your memory or to wet you whistle:

Upstreet Craft Brewing
http://www.upstreetcraftbrewing.com

Do you love Escape Rooms? Well here are two you can check out, first on the island:

Room Escape Cavendish
http://www.roomescapecavendish.com

or on the mainland (Moncton, NB):

Mystery Moncton Mystre
http://mysterymoncton.com

Want some Brew Supplies? Here is Atlantic Canada's biggest and best supplier:

Everwood Ave. Brew Shop
http://www.everwoodavebrewshop.com

Need travel? Here is our go to:

The Travel Store
https://thetravelstore.ca/teresa-gogan/

Love bikes? So do these guys:

MacQueens Bike Shop & Island Tours
https://www.macqueens.com

In the city of Summerside, PEI, check in for after round relief at:

OSheas Pub & Eatery
http://www.osheaspubandeatery.com

And of course or friends on the seaside:

Lords Seaside Cottages
http://www.lordsseasidecottages.com/main-page.html

We have been getting great fundraising initiatives from many of our clubs all throughout the Maritimes. We have multiple winter events planned and we will be releasing our full calendar in about 30 days. Until that time have a great month! We will update you again soon.

Hey Don,

I don't see any details about registering? Seems risky to book accommodations, time off work, and travel without knowing if you are in the event.

I see the event listed as "Pro" A-tier on PDGA. Will this be a "Pro" only event?

Thanks for any additional info you can share.

I did a quick search on the PDGA website for events in Canada and saw both a PRO(A tier) and an AM (B tier) side to this event.

Hi John - we were waiting for the PDGA to post up the dates for their player ratings updates, as we'll be using Disc Golf Scene for the registration site, and that site is now able to catch potential problems with a player's age/division/rating. That is now posted, so we selected the first Sunday after that date to allow for any possible delays to the update, and for a date/time that would be friendly for most players.

See my next post below for more info. If you have any other q's, just reach me here or on FB.

Well hello there!

We are deep in the throws of another Canadian winter but that doesnt mean we cant talk about summer disc golf! As always we grow a bit more excited every day about Nationals so let us fill you in on some more details.

Registration will open Sunday morning, March 18th at 1pm Eastern Standard Time (10 am PST), using Disc Golf Scene. Registration for the Flex start events will open a few days later. At this time we are planning on at least two separate C-tier flex start events, with one at the grand opening of the Huck it course in Middleton PEI on, Wednesday Sept 12, and a second Flex start at Hillcrest on Thursday Sept 13. Both of these events will run from 9:00am to 3:30pm. They will be one round PDGA tournaments with multiple divisions offered. All players must play in a group of 3-5 people and tee off sometime before 3:30. A full schedule will be released for next months update.

We are also pleased to announce that Paige Pierce and Nate Sexton will be offering a disc golf workshop on Thursday afternoon at Hillcrest. Cost and time will be announced later but here is your chance to learn from the best and take those skills with you into the big event.

If you are still looking for lodging we are pleased to announce a partnership with Rodd Royalty as our host hotel. It is a full service hotel with 96 spacious guest rooms and 22 suites available along with a glass enclosed swimming pool, a 105′ waterside, a fitness room, free wireless high speed internet and complimentary parking. The hotel is located on the same highway as Hillcrest Farm Disc Golf Course (20 min. drive) and is a 5-minute drive from both the downtown core and the airport. Guests staying at the hotel are offered a complimentary breakfast. Special room rates are being offered to all traveling players and guests. To book using our discount please use the following link and enter any dates between Sept 11-18 2018:

https://reservations.travelclick.com/85522?hotelId=85522&rateplanid=2741071#/guestsandrooms

Finally our group would like to add a bit of legacy to the National event by offering a new award called the King Cup, named in honour of our Canadian 5-time PDGA World Champion, Elaine King. This beautiful trophy will be given out to Canadas top female and male professional competitor and we hope this will be a legacy that carries on for future Canadian national championship events.

Locally we are still chipping away with winter fundraisers and online Waffles. Our full Maritime event calendar will be released soon so if you are looking at visiting us sooner than later checkout our Facebook page:

https://www.facebook.com/maritimediscgolf/ for more info.

As always stay warm and throw often.

Thanks Don.

This event stands out to me as being one of the best organized I have ever seen.

Your efforts, and all else involved, should be commended.

Many thanks John! I'm looking forward to attending your tournament in June this year as well.

In other news - more stuff on the Nationals in PEI!

Welcome back!

The Maritimes have been gifted with a warm and relatively snow free February. The maple syrup is flowing and the discs are flying! The spring disc golf season is right around the corner and we want to see the competition at its best. After all, registration for Nationals opens up March 18th at 1pm Eastern Time. Sign up early and tell your friends.

We have a couple of huge announcements for this month:

First off, our national championships this year will be a qualifier for the 2018 United States Disc Golf Championship in Rock Hill, South Carolina! The top-5 players who have not already qualified will earn their rights to play in this prestigious international event. As our qualifier will be one of the final ones prior to the USDGC, play well in PEI and you’ll have a great chance to get in.

http://usdgc.com/?page_id=229

Nationals Disc Golf Week is rounding nicely into shape with more to do for the traveling player every day. We just got news that Central Coast Disc Golf (CCDG) will be filming an edition of their popular “Champs vs Chumps” series on the Hillcrest course. There will be spots available to play and lots of room to watch. More details will follow in the weeks to come.

https://www.youtube.com/user/CentralCoastDiscGolf

If you want to know some of the top-rated players who are attending our “A” Tier, check out these player profiles that we’ve been working on:

https://www.docdroid.net/hAs3XQn/bios-nationals-dr2.xlsx

Lastly our association (MDGA) has published its “Majors” calendar for 2018, check it out here on Facebook:

https://tinyurl.com/MDGA-maj

Our team has been working hard behind the scenes to make this the best event our country has ever seen and now it’s almost your turn to show your support, sign up, and come experience what the Maritimes has to offer. If you can’t play but wish to volunteer, next months update will include instructions on how to do just that. But for now lets get ready to make this thing fly.

Sign up March 18th on Disc Golf Scene.

Throw often and be kind!

What a month it has been! Thanks to you the 2018 Canadian Championships will be the biggest disc golf event in Canadian history! As it stands right now we have 26 spots left on the open side, and 16 spots left for the Ams. We are fully expecting a sellout. We couldn’t be more excited. With that being said let’s talk a little more about what your nationals week will look like.

There is a very good chance we will add at least one more event during the week, most likely on Tuesday afternoon. If you have been checking the registered players list you will see we have a bounty of pros and at least one more of them may want to offer a workshop.

https://www.pdga.com/tour/event/34385

You can check out the ams who have signed up so far over here:
https://www.pdga.com/tour/event/34417

For those of you not familiar with flex-starts they are one round single events that you can play at anytime during the posted hours as long as you have at least 3 players in your group. You register before hand then on the day of the event you can play with players of any division as your personal carded score is the only thing that matters. Prizes for the flex starts will be given out at the Saturday banquet.

Just a note for non-maritimers or those who struggle with geography – the Paige Pierce workshop on Tuesday in Dieppe is on the mainland (New Brunswick). Registration for that and the flex start events will open up in 6-8 weeks from now once we have a few more details secured.

We have been getting a lot of interest in the “Champs vs Chumps” event, and honestly we are not surprised. The two champs and details on “How to be a chump” will be made available in the May 1st update after we have sat down with Central Coast at the Glass Blown Open.

Since all players will be given tee times, we will be hosting a player’s meeting on Thursday night in Charlottetown at 8 pm. The location will be made public next month as well as we are now looking for a sweet spot that will hold all 280 of us! We are pretty sure we have found it but again it’s best to iron out the details before making it public.

The Saturday night banquet at Lords is coming together nicely. We will have a ton of good food and prizes to give away while we are there. It will be a great opportunity for all of us to be together and enjoy the best of what we have to offer on the east coast, namely food, music, warm water, and sandy beaches. Parking will be strategic so we are asking people to carpool as much as possible. We do have a long entrance lane so be prepared to do a bit of walking. Dress comfortable, bring a hoodie and a camp chair if you have one, and at least one disc as we will have a few ‘ring of fires’ to play while we are all together. We will also have a small ‘vendor village’ on site too so if you have something you want to sell please get in contact with our TD, Benjamin Smith <laughingbenjamin>. Food will be served starting around 6pm. Please let us know if you have any special dietary restrictions or food allergies.

We are also trying very hard to be a ‘green’ event. Portable water stations will be set up on the courses and players are encouraged to bring reusable things whenever possible. We are working on putting reusable water bottles in everyones player pack too. Both courses are set on beautiful farmland and we hope everyone subscribes to the policy of ‘leave nothing but footprints behind’. So if you pack it in prepare to pack it out.

Depending on how the first two rounds go we may bump up the Sunday start to 07:00 am so we can have the vast majority of the players done in time to see the final round of the MPO top card. The aim is to have the closing ceremonies at the Hillcrest clubhouse at 4:30pm on Sunday evening.

As we have mentioned many times before Hillcrest is a gem of a course. It is a John Houck designed beauty with both long and short tees that offer a variety of challenging and fun shots for players of all kinds. As our good friend once said, “it’s the most fun you will ever have shooting in the sixties.” Of course you can insert your own number here based on your skill level, but either way you’ll be in for a good time. There is lots of information out there on Hillcrest on both DG course review or the PDGA website, or you can find the full story here: http://hillcrestfarmpei.com/discgolf/ . However our second course is a bit more of a mystery for most people so we’ll do our best to give you a little rundown for the Huck It Disc Golf Course.

The Huck It Disc golf Course is located at 1517 Newton Road, Middleton, Prince Edward Island. Some maps may call it ‘Kinkora’ but it really is in Middleton. Owned and operated by Charlie Mccardle, an 8th generation PEI farmer. Even though their family line can be traced back to their landing on PEI in 1833 they are still considered ‘come-from-aways’ by the locals. Charlie was a long time tree planter and fairly new to disc golf when he moved home and started playing at Hillcrest. He was soon inspired by what the Best family had done and realized that he himself had the land to make something similar… and he was right!

His course is nestled in 50+ acres of rolling woods surrounded by farm fields. It’s a beautiful mixed wood mature acadian forest that is interrupted only by a beautiful meandering stream. Four homemade (but very safe) bridges span the water and offer a wonderful charm that is a luxury to find on any disc golf course. The trees that were cut to make the fairways became bridges, benches, and unique features for the course. All tee pads are concrete with lots of space and signage. Although the par is not set yet the aim is to end up around 60. There are many beautiful shots and challenging positions and one signature hole that is sure to make some enemies. The course is open to play right now informally. The club house is pretty simple and not all the baskets are permanent yet. There is still some cleaning to be done but we are completely confident that it will be ready in lots of time for nationals. Both of these courses are pay to play, the first of their kind in the Maritimes. More info on this course and pictures will follow sometime this summer. If you would like to see some pictures in the meantime and are on instagram check out Huck It @huckitdiscgolf or the Maritime Disc Golf Association #maritimedga

One last note for you travellers, if you are coming by plane and you haven’t booked your ticket don’t forget to call our travel agency at 1.800.565.5404. They can help you secure the best deal out there and they have been very generous to us by supplying goodies for the player packs. If you are driving don’t forget that you have to pay to leave the island (that’s how they get you!) so make sure you save at least 48$ CAD for the trip home.

Spring is here so take off a layer, have fun and throw often.

Welcome back to the update train! Forgive our absence last month but between the Glass Blown Open (GBO) and selling a house our committee members flat out took a bogie on the last hole. With that being said we will double up our efforts this month and take a run at the target!

First off, we have found a place for our player’s check in and official welcome event on Thursday evening from 8-9pm. We will be using The Beer Gardens:
http://beergardenpei.com/, which is located in downtown Charlottetown (on Kent Street). We will be distributing player packs from 6:30-9:30pm and will have information on both competition courses and rules for the event. We strongly encourage all players to attend. The player meeting itself is from 8-9pm.

We will also have beer! Not just for Thursday night but a beer made especially for this historic Canadian event. The PEI Brewing Company http://peibrewingcompany.com/ is working on brewing us our own special ‘Nor’easter’. More details will be announced next month.

We are also excited to announce that UDisc Live, https://udisclive.com/ will be covering our event: https://udisclive.com/schedule/ Stay up to date with live scores after every hole, follow your friends and keep an eye on the leader boards. After seeing this service live at the GBO we can say without a doubt it is fantastic!

Speaking of the GBO, we were able to pick out some sweet player pack discs and goodies and we very much think you’ll love what we have in store. Let us quash the rumours right now… there are no ZÜCA carts in the player packs, but thanks for asking!

One more addition to the Saturday night banquet – we will have a washer toss tournament! Don’t worry if you have never played or even heard of ‘washer toss’ it’s basically like mini disc golf! It’s a Maritime favourite and we know you’ll love it. The first place team will win a set of washer boxes to take home and spread the joy.

We are going to open up registration for the C-Tier Flex Start events in early July just as soon as we close registration for the Nationals. There are only 18 spots left in the Open division so if you know someone sitting on the fence, their time is running out. Wait list spots are still available at no cost to you (just make sure you don’t select any of the ‘Optional Items when you sign up, but you can put that information into the ‘Notes’ field.)

We will be offering a chartered fishing boat trip on Wednesday morning (details on the Nationals Facebook Event page) and an escape room experience on Tuesday evening in Cavendish, PEI. Registrations for these will happen on Facebook later this month.

More cottages have just been made available. For information call Benjamin Smith at 902-669-0764.
As always we have more goodies in the works to try and give you the best disc golf experience we can provide. Feedback is always welcome either by emailing our TD @ laughingbenjamin@gmail.com or by posting on our Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/events/351611005322548/
