I won't be at Kanata next week, but I just want to point out that Kanata allows the upper HCs the opportunity to win with an adjusted score. Making them play the islands takes that advantage from them.

Unless there's a discussion to take the advantage from the lower HCs at Ettyville, this doesn't sound like a fair thing to do.

I find this very interesting and something we've all noted in the past and discussed a bit. Outside of the impracticality of having a "course specific handicap" for everyone, there should be math at play here.

Bourgie???

My thoughts are if the course "par" is a higher number there should be a mathematical adjustment for that event when it is occuring as opposed to a mathematical adjustment to the handicap after the event. Is that making sense? Take the median handicap and adjusting it up and down on either side as a factor of the course par.

Higher par courses (harder scoring) would see lower handicaps decreased and higher handicaps increased from the handicap median.

Lower par courses (easier scoring) would see lower handicaps increased and higher handicaps decreased from the handicap median.

As par stretches or contracts so would the handicap.
Or we can go with Chevy and "I was told there'd be no math".

It's more a factor of Slope than Scratch when we talk about high handicaps having a better chance of winning adjusted score. The closer all scores are to the average score at an event, the more likely it is that a high-handicap player will take the win.

Ettyville and Fortune Longs typically have a much higher variation from low score to high score for an event than Kanata or the Shire do, which is why higher handicaps are more likely to win adjusted at those courses.

A course like Fortune Shorts falls somewhere in between the two ranges, meaning that anyone has a reasonable chance of winning.

Fortunately, the ODGC has a couple of high slope, a couple of low slope, and a couple of 113ish slope layouts to play, so everyone has the opportunity to win.

You're correct though, John, in suggesting that course specific handicaps would be the perfect solution, even if that perfect solution is completely unfeasible. smile

Cool Mark.

Again the slope is a post factum where it could be a pre-factum as a factor to par for the course potentially OR an pre-established average of slope for a layout to factor in. That could adjust better for slope but at the end of the day those that shoot it out win and usually that's what happens.

Even I won adjusted score at Ettyville once. That wet round where I played like the "father" in Caddyshack. Less the lightning, of course. smile May 29, 2012. Bound to show up on "things that happened on this date in history" discussions anytime now. Just like April 30th, 2013. The day OMR "pants"'d himself. laughing

TOSS 2013 [2]
2013-05-07 18:15:00
QB 1.2
Conditions: Gorgeous.
Temp: 26°C
Wind: WSW 3 km/h
15 players participated in this round.
Action from Kanata DGC

Congratulations to our winners:

1. Alex Weirdsma (47, adj 35.6)
2. Andrew Vallee (42, adj 37.5)
3. Steve Crane (54, adj 38.2)
3. Mike Adams (49, adj 38.2)

Your play outshone the rest of the field, and netted you some fine results. No aces tonight, so the ace pot rolls over to next week, where we'll Open the season at Camp Fortune, playing off the Short Tees. Hope to see you there!

Full results to follow.

Also, the Sens won!
