Understable Preparing for Tree Oh Challenge

Ottawa, July 9, 2001 -- In a press conference held earlier today that could only be described as a media feeding frenzy, Chuck Shick, Dog Faced Boy and Shaggy announced the formation of Team Understable.

"This tourney is a lot like a steal cage match. Except of course with less hitting and smaller shoes. Oh yeah, there won't be a cage either..." explained Shaggy, Understable's designated long-bomber.

"We are going into this thing with two goals in mind: having fun, playing well and kickin' ass!...ok... so maybe its three things," admitted Dog Faced Boy.

The team held some preliminary practice holes Saturday and feels comfortable with what they have to work with. "Our chemistry is magnificent!" exclaimed Mr. Shick. "We have all the comradery and team spirit of the three musketeers without the goofy looking hats and French accents." When asked if the team would be sporting the funny looking pants, Mr. Shick offered no response.

Although Shaggy has been sent to play courses in California as a means of adversity training, the team will be resting for most of this week.

Very glad to heap on more hype, I am pleased to announce the Irish-German-Ukrainian coalition of O'Brien-Reitlingshoefer-Darcovich, slated to appear at this year's Tree-Oh. This grizzled team does not yet have a formal label, but our media agents are hard at work to come up with a suitable moniker for our two-thirds-plaid-cloaked-ultra-old-school
disc golf juggernaut.

Does the term "Schlager" have any significance in Gaelic??

I think "Schlager" means swill in Ukranian.

Actually,

"полоскання" is swill in Ukranian.

"палючий біль дупа" is smartass.

Seeing as the worm is getting nibbles...

"Schlager" in German is the name of a really syrupy style of popular music. It means "brother-in-law" in Ukrainian.

Schlager blades are used in duels with real blades, and despite the fact that the blade is the "throw of the future", schlager blades hurt more when they hit you.

News of the schlager duel is now out in the open and the duel on course is set to go on the doorstep of the National Capital.

Mysterious teams of former Tree-Oh champions may have something to say about the Understable Boyz or Team IGU. The High and Mighty and their Unemployable comrades in arms may be the first to draw blood on the fields where Jack Carter once had a picnic some several hundred years back.

Even ye Olde Zonkers will be putting their time honoured skillz on the course, making their Tree-Oh debut.

In keeping with the mysterious nature of the signups, Flamingo trained Brothers will be taking in local disc staff to make a run away from the bottom end of the field, and have fun in the process. Meanwhile, the Westenders continue to be the dark horse of the field.

Meet them and more out at JC Park, where teams will prove their might on the field of battle.

Amidst a thick haze of debaucherous recreating in honour of the Godfather of Soul, Team Cheap Thrills was possibly created.

The loosly organized coalition of shit-talkers planned to enter a team representing the travelling ultimate team of the same name.

Although numerous logistical challenges must first be addressed, one thing is for certain, they may or may not be there.

The Bushwhackers (all four of us) had a blast at Tree-Oh 2001. Perhaps next year we will get a little further along in the standings Thanks to Don for the organizing and to all our opponents for a fun day of disc golf.

See you on the course!

Thanks to all the teams who came out for this year's edition of the Tree-Oh, and congratulations to our winning team: "Basket Case", which consisted of Ken Darcovich, Claus Reitlingshoefer, and Tom O'Brien.

The first round of 18 holes used a "Best Drive" format allowed the eventual winners to set the pace with a terrific round of -10.

No team was able to dive under par on the "Worst Drive" round, although Team Understable (Jeff Meldrum, Carl Visser, and Joel McEwan) was able to prove they were just as good as the leaders.

The Skills Competition opened things up, with Team Understable moving up 4 strokes on the balanced efforts of their mid-range throw, big-arm launch, and putting accuracy.
The Buchwhackers got onto the winning column courtesy of Nick's substitute, Grant Lawson, who won the putting competition.

The final round used a time-saving alternate shot format, and although Understable had pulled to within 2 strokes, Basket Case put it away with a -4 round on the "Technical 8" holes on the north end of the course.

Here are the basic results. More info and photos will soon appear on the ODGC web site:

# 2001 Ottawa Tree-Oh Challenge: Best Drive, Worst Drive, (Skills Competition: Putting / Mid / Big Arm), Alt-Shot, Total

1. Basket Case: Ken Darcovich, Claus Reitlingshoefer, Tom O'Brien [ -10, +1, (+2, +2, -1), -4 = -10 ]
2. Team Understable: Jeff Meldrum, Carl Visser, Joel McEwan [ -4, +1, (0, -1, 0), 0 = -4 ]
3. Screaming Yellow Zonkers (Peter McKinnon, Steve Penny, Rod Nicholls) [ -5, +3, (+2, +2, +1), +3 = +6 ]
4. Canadian F.B.I.: Kevin Haggerty, John Kean, Greg Herage [ -3, +10, (+1, 0, +2), +1 = +11 ]
5. Bushwhackers: Andrew Leach, Andrew Bourque, Nick Roberts, Grant Lawson [+4, +6, (-1, +2, +2), +6 = +19 ]
6. Par Nots: Mike McCormick, Nicola Hunt, Luke McCormick [ +7, +13, (+2, +1, +2), +11 = +36 ]

Let me know if you want more photos...

In other news, The Ottawa Citizen should soon be running an article on the course, with photos and commentary of Rob W.
