There's a boat called "Brother" (in last place), and a boat called "Roxy".

I agree Rolls. That's nuts.

There's a book about this race.

It's called Godforsaken Sea, by Derek Lundy. It's a great read.

Here Here! I couldn't put it down.

The Vende Globe is an insane race, and many sailors have perished during the race.

I think I would be surprised to hear if no-one had ever died during the race.

I am always amazed at this race! I would never have the balls to do this. Nevermind lacking the technical ability to sail, the whole sailing around Cape Horn thing would just never work for me.

I'll stick to my canoe on a lake or some class II or III rapids, thanks!

I have to get my hands on that book!

...oh yeah...GO BROTHER!!

You can expect things to begin to get really interesting now that the leaders are getting further south. Once they hit the 40's (40 degrees latitude south), the weather can get dangerous for days at a time. The race is really exciting right now, as first and second place are only a few knots apart. TF, do you sail?

Yes, when I have a boat, its not a students sport. Growing up at our cottage our family had Lasers. So I learnt basiscs from my Dad and stuff. Then at the camp I went to the had Cl's, Snipes, and Lightning's. The boat I was in ended up winning the big series of races due in much to our skipper who taught me alot about racing and stuff. After that Month at Camp (Thats the periods of time at the camp) the local Cottage regatta they had a race of Lasers. The field was me (12 years old) One old guy who travels around and goes in races with lasers, and like 15 "Old" men or so, I guess we will call them Adult Males. So the race starts(Short story) the one good guy takes off from the start and wins by like 15 min or so. I I come in second and the rest of the oldies come in 20 min later. It was sweet I schooled all of them(Except for the bagger of course). I was in Second from the start and making distance on the pack the whole way. The catch is the winds were ridiculusly low and it suited my body frame. I also schooled my dad which was the best part of all Have not really sailed since then how ever, but I can do it no prob. Wind surfing......that however I dont get, you?

I'm a big fan of sailing. I want to get my own boat (something trailerable, either a pocket cruiser or daysailer). I've done the cottage thing a few times, but I'm just aching to get to some bigger water. I've never raced, though.

The Vende Globe really is the pinacle of racing if you ask me. The America's cup is about big teams and bigger money. The Vende globe is a testiment to the endurance of the sailer, and the seaworthiness of the boat. Sure, its drawn out over months of racing, but it is always exciting.

The next big milestone in the race will happen this evening (barring disaster) when PRB (Vincent Riou) crosses the first Cape longitude. Some of the boats are surfing in great southern weather, making a mind-boggling 30 knots (almost 60km/hr), and averaging over 14 knots. The lead is really tight, and one boat broached yesterday (though it was back underway in short order).

The really dangerous part of the race has already begun.

I thought a knot was equivalent to 1.5 miles an hour.

Interesting to see how the weather has such an effect with course. If you time it right you can burst aheard or else you got to detour around some crap. Boss's southeast route seems to have paid off .

1 Knot = 1.852 km/hr
= 1.151 mph (as Americans like to write it)

This race is just getting better and better! An amaing time is about to be set for crossing the longitude of the first Cape, and the leaders are about to BLAST away from the "P" pack now that they are south. Take a look at the weather reports for today and tomorrow, and you'll see the trouble that those in the "P" pack are in: They just can't get south, and they're being blown closer to the shores of Africa where there is very little wind forcast. Congrats to Roland Jourdain, who is doing a GREAT job of catching up, now less than a day out of the lead and heading for what looks like some great weather.

Cheers!

holy Doodle! I just finished this book. These guys (and ladies thankyouverymuch) ARE crazy.

I am not a sailor and know very little about it but this is a great read. The author does a bang-up job describing what the seas in the Southern Ocean are like. Absolutely amazing that people do this...

Highly recommended!

btw, 3 racers have already passed Cape Horn and are headed for home. It looks like it'll be a really close finish!

There's less than 130 nautical miles separating the leader from third place and the leader is less than 300 nm from the finish. Only 41.2 nm separate 1st from 2nd...it could be over by 4:00 or 5:00 tomorrow afternoon.

This is after 3 months of racing and thousands of nm...cool...

It's over!

Report

Thanks to you sailing types who sparked my interest which led me to read the book and then follow this race. It's been fun!

There's still racers out there with 5000+ nm to go!
